Smoking rates stop falling

Here’s a quick excerpt

The CDC has reported that smoking rates in the US have remained the same over the last few years after having fallen year on year for the previous 7 years (1997-2004).
The government’s target is to have only 12% of the adult population smoking by 2010 but the figures suggest that they will miss the target by a long shot.
Statistics show that 20.8% of the adult population smoked last year representing a total of 45 million adults. The statistics also show that a total of 91 million Americans have been smokers at some point in their lives (defined as smoking over 100 cigarettes in their lives).
The report indicated that 80% of smokers smoked every day and 44% of smokers had tried at least once to quit smoking.
Evidence suggests that quitting smoking is the single most advantageous change a smoker can make in their lives to improve their health and lower risks [...]

Celebrate Hawaii’s Smoke-Free Law!

Here’s a quick excerpt
Today will celebrate the one-year anniversary of becoming the nation’s 15th smoke-free state. This comprehensive smoke-free workplaces law is continuing to eliminate our community’s exposure to secondhand smoke.
Employees enjoy smoke-free work environments and bar/restaurant patrons have more pleasurable experiences during a night on the town. Since enacted its law, several other states such as Illinois, Maryland and Minnesota have passed similar smoke-free laws. Thanks to policymakers, health organizations and concerned citizens, one in every two Americans now lives in a place with smoke-free workplaces.
Across the state there are several events where you can celebrate your right to live smoke-free! For a complete listing, visit the community calendar at www.clearthesmoke.org.

Secondhand Smoke—a Silent Killer

Here’s a quick excerpt
Chances are you wouldn’t eat rat poison or drink nail polish remover. So, why subject yourself to secondhand smoke, which contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including arsenic (found in rat poison), acetone (an ingredient in nail polish remover) and formaldehyde (used to embalm bodies)?
Secondhand smoke is the smoke given off by the burning end of cigarettes, pipes or cigars and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers that can then be involuntarily inhaled by nonsmokers. The reality is that although you may never pick up a cigarette in your lifetime, you can still develop life-threatening diseases simply by exposure to secondhand smoke.
Secondhand smoke is responsible for more than 38,000 lung cancer and heart disease deaths among adult nonsmokers in the United States.
There are no safe levels of exposure, but you can take steps to clear the secondhand smoke from your life. Start by declaring your car and home [...]

The Great American Smokeout

admin wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
The third Thursday of November is coming and so here comes the Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and a huge contributor toward overall cancer rates in America and Europe so it is noble that the American Cancer Society run this event to help people get off the smokes. However, there is a side point about being a smoker and being told a specific day is the day when you should try to quit.

In the UK, there is the national no smoking day and do you know what? It makes not the slightest difference to most smokers because smokers do not try to quit smoking ‘en masse’ because anti-smoking organisations want them to. Smokers quit (successfully) when they are good and ready and prepared.
On national no smoking day in the UK, the office blocks still have the smoking hoards outside [...]

EasyQuit System mp3 – what do you think?

admin wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
If you haven’t bought and read my book, the EasyQuit System yet, I would like to know if it would be more appealing to you if it were available as an mp3 audio book?
I know a lot of people don’t like reading a book from the screen (I can cope with it but that’s just me!) and printing out a 100 page book is a bit daunting. To that end, I am in the process of recording the book for my customers so they can just upload the mp3 files to their mp3 player, ipod or listen to them straight from their computer. It will be about 3 hours of audio and will can be burned onto 3 CDs.
Either way, let me know what you think.
Cheers, Pete

Stop the Spin on Hawaii’s Smoke-free Law

nospam@example.com (Clear the Smoke) wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt

It’s been nearly a year since Hawaii adopted its new smoke-free law and
while most people surveyed—a whopping 82 percent—are happy with it, recent
media buzz has suggested the law is having a
negative effect on tourism, especially in the Asian market.
But both state tourism officials and Japanese
travel wholesalers have yet to see any data linking the smoke-free law to a
decline in visitors to Hawaii.
In fact, the most recent figures show Hawaii hosted 6.3
percent more Japanese visitors this August when compared to the same month last
year—a full two months before the smoke-free law took effect.
In addition, several large Hawaii hotel chains
such as Outrigger and OHANA Hotels and Marriott Resorts have gone a step
further and declared their rooms smoke-free, ensuring their guests—smokers or
not—breathe fresh, clean air throughout their stay.
With 26 states and many countries around the world
boasting smoke-free laws, visitors to Hawaii
are likely to expect, if not demand, the right to [...]
