Healthy Lifestyle Factors For Longevity
Dr. Richard Browne wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
A number of studies have shown associations between individual lifestyle factors, such as smoking and diet, and risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and various cancers. Few studies, however, have looked at the bottom line — how a combination of lifestyle factors might influence mortality.
A new, large-scale study from researchers […]

Two Extraordinary Women Who Have Transformed Hard Times into Real Support

Meet Katie Brown and Bonnie Addario. Though they live across the country and have never met, (Katie is a mom of small kids in Dallas, TX and Bonnie is a former CEO and grandmother of three who lives near San Francisco), they’ve both been blindsided by the deadliest of all cancers – lung cancer. Katie lost her father less than a year after he was diagnosed. Bonnie is celebrating her three-year anniversary from escaping the usually fateful reality of lung cancer. She’s one of the rare ones who wear the badge of survivor.
Both women discovered the hard way that there weren’t a lot of places, if any, to turn to find “someone who has been there” during their early days when their worlds were rocked by the diagnosis of this killer cancer.

Spreading the word

Mary Lou Fisher has never smoked, but she has lung cancer.Fisher, 68, represents an unsuspecting and often misunderstood face of this deadly disease.
”Lots of people (think) I have breast cancer. That’s kind of the common thing among women,” Fisher said. “So, when I tell them it’s lung cancer, I say, ‘But I never smoked a day in my life.’ You just want to get that out there, so they can’t blame it on that.”
For far too long, she said, there has been a stigma attached to lung cancer.
”There’s a ‘You smoked so you must have deserved it’ kind of attitude. Nobody deserves cancer,” she said.

Radon is a silent killer

Here’s a quick excerpt
On Feb. 8, 2006, Gloria Linnertz, of Waterloo, Ill., lost her husband, Joe, to lung cancer.
That same day, Joe became a statistic — he was one of more than 21,000 people who die each year of radon-induced lung cancer in the United States.
“He led a very healthy lifestyle,” said Gloria, who is vice president of the national group Cancer Survivors Against Radon. “When we asked the oncologist how he could have gotten lung cancer, he said, ‘Smoking,’ but Joe hadn’t smoked in 27 years.
“We were not around anyone that smoked, and we had no idea what radon gas was — and we were living with over four times the EPA action level for 18 years,” she said. “Radon is deadly, and what’s so awful, is people don’t know about it.”

Leo Heinricy says, “I had a pain in my chest and I didn’t know if I had the flu or what. I had it 2 or 3 days so I went in to my doctor in Dell Rapids to have it checked out. They did an X-Ray and found the spot. They sent me to Avera McKennan after that.
And that’s how Coleman’s Leo Heinricy rang in 2008. Not the celebration he had hoped for. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in January.
Leo says, “It scares the living hell out of you. Excuse the language, but it does.”

Researchers Identify Another Potential Biomarker for Lung Cancer
Debi wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have demonstrated that a recently discovered class of molecule called microRNA (miRNAs), regulate the gene expression changes in airway cells that occur with smoking and lung cancer. These findings, which appear in the on-line early edition of journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may lead to a new, relatively non-invasive biomarker for smoking-related lung diseases.
Approximately 1.3 billion people smoke cigarettes worldwide, which contributes to five million preventable deaths per year. Smoking is a significant risk factor for lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the world, with more than one million deaths worldwide annually. Eighty-five to 90 percent of subjects with lung cancer in the United States are current or former smokers with 10 to 20 percent of heavy smokers developing this disease. Because of the lack of effective diagnostic biomarkers and the inability [...]
