周日在三藩市金門公園舉行了一場為肺癌醫學研究籌款的5公里路跑/健走活動，曾被診斷只有9個月可活、但成功抗癌約3年的灣區華裔癌症病友王意平組隊參與，剛接受完放射治療的她身體仍然虛弱，由子女代替母親跑完全程，最後籌得約3500元，全數捐作肺癌研究經費。
居住在波羅阿多的王意平2006年診斷出患有肺癌，當時醫師告訴她立即展開化療也只有9個月～1年的壽命，一度因此相當消沉的王意平後在親友與宗教力量支持下，逐漸振作精神，在史丹福大學醫療中心接受化療並參與新藥Avastin的臨床試驗。3年過去了，王意平的病況讓醫護人員感到振奮，她曾受邀與開發治療癌症藥物的Genentech生技公司高層會面，並在史丹福創立了一個肺癌支援小組，且積極參與教會活動。
王意平表示，自己在一周前才得知美國肺癌基金會舉行的5公里路跑/健走籌款活動，當下立即決定組織隊伍參與，「社會大眾對於肺癌的認知、對癌友的關懷都有待我們一起透過這樣的活動來提升。」她表示，社會大眾對於肺癌常存在誤解，就是患者多是因為自己的抽煙習慣才會罹癌，事實上許多病患一輩子沒有抽過煙，像她自己就是最好的例子。
王意平表示，不像乳癌研究經費充足，政府撥給肺癌的研究經費只有乳癌相關研究的1/10，她表示，追根究底都是因為肺癌患者因為初期毫無症狀，被診斷出時都已經接近末期，換句話說，肺癌患者存活的時間不長，又需要接受化療，身心狀況都讓他們無法組織起來向社會大眾或政府當局爭取權益。
事實上，王意平今年6月接受電腦斷層掃描時，醫師發現她的腦中有數個小腫瘤，隨即展開全腦放射治療，因此在周日（2日）活動當天，她的身體仍然相當虛弱，無法行走太久，她的子女代替媽媽完成全程。
